BLYTH Volunteer Lifeboat Service's offshore lifeboat was called out to aid a 35ft boat which had become stranded early this morning.
The offshore rescue team received a call from the coastguard at around 6.45am Saturday and quickly launched The Abbie Dean Spirit of Blyth and Wansbeck to recover the stranded vessel.

On arrival, about half a mile off the Blyth coast, Blyth Rescue found that five persons were stranded on board the Lady Maw after the steering on the boat had failed.

The Abbie Dean Spirit of Blyth and Wansbeck then towed the stricken vessel safely back to harbour.

Lifeboat manager Earnie Laws said: "This kind of rescue is becoming more common, especially as we're seeing an increase in the use of pleasure boats.

"It was an old boat and one of the steering pins split which, unfortunately, you can't do much about."
