MICHAEL Owen trained in front of more than 10,000 Newcastle United fans at St James's Park yesterday.
The striker – yet to kick a ball in anger for the club this season – worked with defender Abdoulaye Faye and physio David Henderson, while his team-mates took part in a practice match.

Owen is expected to play in a behind-closed-doors game ahead of
Sunday's season-opener at Old Trafford.

However, it is looking increasingly unlikely that Owen – who has a calf problem – will feature against Manchester United.

Absent from the open training session were the injured Obafemi Martins, Habib Beye, Joey Barton, Mark Viduka and Andy Carroll.

Of that quintet, only Beye is understood to have a chance of playing in the televised clash.

Right-back Beye has an Achilles problem, but could line up for Kevin Keegan's side with the benefit of an injection.
